CARTE BLANCHE
As designers we find inspiration all around us, whether it be a book, magazine, film, photograph, or textile, there is something about that thing or object that resonates with us. The inspiration gets embedded in our brains and we use it whenever a project calls for it. With this being said, could it be possible that we purposely surround ourselves with what inspires us? Can we take it further and ask if our environments inspire our creations?
For my thesis I attempted to answer these questions and illustrate my findings by creating CARTE BLANCHE, a hypothetical interior design firm. This firm embraces the philosophy that one's work environment influences one's creations and this concept is explained in this book by analyzing the affects that interior design factors have on an individual. The factors that were examined are: color, space layout, and lighting.
To further illustrate this philosophy, I visually analyzed the studio spaces and influential work of renowned graphic designers: Marian Bantjes, Stefan Sagmeister and Massimo Vignelli. Each section of the book was designed to reflect each designer's individual style, as well as, their influences and inspirations.
